Basale Soppina Saaru / Malabar Spinach Curry
Malabar Leaves Curry or Basale Soppina Saaru is very tasty and healthy lunch recipe.

Ingredients required

  • Malabar Spinach: 1 kattu or 1 bunch
  • Chopped Onions 2 nos
  • Chopped tomatoes 2 nos
  • Karadha pudi / Sambar Powder – 2 spoon
  • Grated coconut- 1/2 cup
  • Toor dal 100 gms
  • Poppy seeds 1 spoon
  • Tamarind – one small lemon size
  • Salt to taste

Seasoning

  • Oil or ghee 2 spoons
  • Mustard seeds 1/2 tea spoon
  • curry leaves
  • Hing

How to make:

  • Wash toor dal, malabar spinach and tomatoes and keep aside
  • Chop spinach, onions and tomatoes.
  • Heat oil in a cooker and add mustard seeds once the oil is heated and then add curry leaves and hing and then add chopped onions and chopped tomatoes and later chopped spinach.
  • Malabar spinach will be little sticky, so fry it till it becomes nonsticky.
  • Now add washed toor dhal and add 1 liter of water to it
  • Cook it for 2-3 whistles.

Masala for curry

  • Take grated coconut, soaked tamarind, kharada pudi (sambhar powder) and poppy seeds in a mixer jar.
  • Grind these to a fine paste.
  • Masala is now ready.

Now add this masala to the cooked dhal and spinach. Mix well and add salt to taste. Basale soppu sambar or malabar spinach curry is ready to eat and serve. This goes well with rice and ragi ball with ghee. 

Serves for 8 people for one time.

  3. Also it is good for healthy hair growth.
  4. Spinach is good in iron content.
  5. Also good for ladies (if they have too much white discharge) – it will be reduced.
Hint: If you want to grow in your garden, you can plough the stem of malabar plant in a pot of fertile soil.

Point to note: If you are allergic to onions, can use hing instead of onions.
